John Brown's Body is the original. He was a radical abolitionist with strong religious views. In 1854 he chopped up some pro-slavery settlers and dumped their bodies in the Pottawatomie River during "Bleeding-Kansas." In 1857 he seized the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia so as to arm Virginia slaves and start a rebellion. He was hanged for treason in 1858. Union soldiers sang, "John Brown's body lies mouldering in the grave, but his truth goes marching on. Glory, glory, Hallelujah!"
